Since the tractor was running and then got progressively worse I'd suspect a fuel problem. My opinion is a bit prejudiced because I've had many problems with old updraft carbs...even after completely rebuilding them. OSHA may not approve of my methods but if I feel there is a fuel delivery problem I crank the engine over and spray short bursts of starter fluid directly into the carb. If I can get it started and keep it running for a minute or two then it pretty much confirms a fuel problem. The real danger here is if it's NOT a fuel problem but a timing problem and you get a backfire thru the intake. I personally have never seen a gear set jump or break a tooth on the cam or crank but anything is possible. Before removing the front cover I'd double check the distributor..it's easy to skip a tooth if it was removed to install the points (very easy if it's a front mount unit). Next I'd look at the valves to see if one is sticking and THEN I'd have a look at the timing gears. Hope this helps. Good luck.
