The guy who farmed next door to us was a plane mechanic stationed at the air base near Pearl Harbor on the morning of the attack. By his mid-60's he was nearly deaf from all years of engine noise from planes and tractors alike. The only thing he'd say about December 7 was "A lot of folks had it worse than me..."
He could fix anything. I saw him making a set of timing gears for his AO because Deere wanted too much for new ones.
Another old timer from church was a diver in the Navy, his ship was out to sea that morning. He spent the better part of the next year diving at Pearl Harbor for rescue, then recovery. Pretty grim times.
