Facts from Cold Country... Cold temperatures reduce the volatility of the fuel/air mixture making an engine harder to start. Modern multi viscosity oils do not get as thick in cold temps as old single viscosity oils did so warming the oil, though it may help, is not as effective as heating the coolant. The Most Effective way to start a cold engine is to heat the coolant around the cylinders. The most effective way to do that is with a block heater. Second most effective way is with a heater in the lower radiator hose but there is more heat loss through the radiator with one. A 600 watt block heater is more effective than an 800 watt lower hose heater. On cold days I plug my tractors in. An hour or two and they will start like it's July.
