There are always people who over bid on the cost of inputs, especially when farm commodity prices are high. When fat cattle prices are very high the cost of feeder cattle often get bid up to where there is no profit left after feeding them out to market weight. It pays to crunch the numbers before bidding. When the bidding wars start it is often money ahead to sell your feeder calves and the remaining feed to lock in a good profit and let someone else put in all the labor and risk to finish them.
