If it MELTS the wire that sounds more like a near dead short maybe in the wiring. BAT on the VR should wire up to the LOAD (NOT Battery) side of an ammeter if so equipped, with the other SUPPLY side of the ammeter leading to the hot ungrounded battery post maybe via a wire on a starter switch or solenoid?? I think its wired wrong orrrrrrrrrrrr incorrect polarity orrrrrrrrrrrr theres a short in the wiring from BAT to ammeter to ungrounded battery post. They make VR's for POS or NEG Ground,,,,,,,,,for Class A or B charging systems, I suspect incorrect wiring or a short or wrong (Pos or Neg) grounding...
