I am not sure if the good-ole-boy network is all that bad. If I am looking to hire 2 people, and I have 5 applicants, I have to pick the best for my company. If I KNOW 2 of them, and I know they are hard workers. I knew their mom or dad have strong work ethic. I also have known the kids and seen them grow up. The other 3 candidates have to be really good to come out on top in that situation.
Is that system sometimes abused? YES it is. I agree there are times when some relation is hired and they are not worth anything. But that happens more often when you hire strangers. There are LOTS of people who just do not know how to work.
Is that unfair? Might be. But it is also unfair to discard the 2 you know just because you know them, because you are afraid to be a good ole boy?
I taught in the same school district for 30 years. My son and daughter went through that system K-12. Daughter told me in 3rd grade she wanted to be a teacher. First job she got out of college was in that system. The personnel director who hired her was the principal that I worked for. She has been there 17 years. I have been retired 15.
Is that the good-ole-boys system also? Or is that just having a pretty good idea exactly who you are hiring?
