I had a Toyota Silica with a 20R OHC 4 cyl. and transistor driven mechanical point ignition. Periodically the thing would stop for no reason......once on the way to work one morning. Fix was to get a piece of paper, get out, access the points, and with them closed, drag the paper through them a few times. Put things back, get in, crank her up and be on my way.....maybe a 10 minute job. I assume this was base drive for a transistor and there wasn't enough current to burn through the corrosion on the point contacts.
