Ron, some classic symptoms are blue smoke instead of black, indicating excessively worn rings letting oil getting by; excessive overheating (though that can be caused by problems its own); increased oil consumption; oil changing color (indicating possible coolant getting in the oil; lower oil pressure; harder to start; louder noises in both the lower (crankshaft) region and/or upper (piston slap); loss of power. Those are some things an engine in need of an overhaul might display. As suggested a compression check is one method of checking the top end health of your engine since it will find leaking valves, head gaskets or troubles with pistons and/or rings and other stuff in the tops of engines. The bottom end has no such convenient check and would be indicated by some of the other problems above. The key here is the problems noted above being relative to how the engine used to be. For example noise, they're all noisy but is it noticably noisier than before, is it changing fairly rapidly, etc. Same for the smoke etc. I've personally never been one to jump on them too quickly unless there was pretty good reason, for they are a lot like the monkey wetting in the cash register, it soon runs into money. Have a good day sir. John
