I looked for parts diagrams for your model. It appears that two different gear boxes were used over the years. Neither looks like your picture. One of the gear boxes in the diagrams had a vent while the other didn't.
Are there any identifying marks or numbers on your gearbox?
The vent would have to be above oil level. The one AT2572 gearbox shown on the diagrams had a vent on one the two bolt holes on the PTO connection end of the gearbox.
