The only antifreeze they had in those days was alcohol which boiled at a lower temperature than water in non-pressurized radiators so they used water and then had to drain it every night. And, as others have pointed out, they would run those Rumley's all year around. Some areas saw threshing being done in late fall and even in the winter. The grain bundles were stored in the barn until the threshing crew got around to them. In our little part of Central Siberia the Rumley went in a shed that was built just the right size for it and it ran a sawmill all winter long. We didn't see ethylene glycol used as a coolant until after WWII (The Big One).
