M35 ''Deuce and a half''. The workhorse of the US Army for many, many years. Designed by REO and built by many manufacturers, it was probably in service longer than any other truck in US history. I remember when they went to multi-fuel engines. Our manufacturers had to call on the Germans for help. We used diesel fuel exclusively in the units I was with but they could burn jet fuel, kerosene, fuel oil or, in emergency, gasoline mixed with 30 wt engine oil. The exhaust was quite smoky on those original multi-fuel engines so a turbo charged version was introduced which developed no noticeable increase in power but did clean up the exhaust. Five tons (10,000 lbs) on the highway. Half that cross country although they were frequently overloaded. Thanks for the memory. I was licensed to drive them but rarely did due to the nature of my assignments.

Elliott said while this
