I would just like to expand a bit on what Jim is saying about distributor rotation. You said the firing order was thought to be 1 2 4 3. So lets write it 2 4 3 1 moving the one to the end. That still follows the order the wires are in the cap but you just start at a different cylinder. Now look at the order if you misinterpreted the rotation direction, read the other direction around the cap makes it the common firing order of 1 3 4 2.
