Mississippi river water has a lot of pollutants by the time it reaches Minneapolis/St. Paul. Fish kills on smaller steams are still common despite efforts to clean up the streams and rivers. I can only imagine how it is 2000 miles further down stream.
Reverse osmosis water filtration is the new standard for water treatment for municipal and rural water systems. It is not cheap. I suppose it won't be too far into the future when even feedlots will need extensive water treatment for livestock drinking water to keep the amount of ag and industrial chemicals in our meat and dairy within acceptable limits.
