I have done quite a bit of mechanical work for friends and neighbors. In general, I don't discuss price in most cases. On the really hard stuff, I decide what I want before accepting the job. Like doing a timing belt on a PT Cruiser. Most will offer me more than I would have charged. Those that do will get further service from me. Those that don't will find me to be too busy.
Most importantly, I am NOT a commercial shop. I do not charge commercial rates (when I charge) because I do not feel entitled to the top dollar that a commercial shop would charge. I am not paying a lot of overhead, insurance, and commercial utilities.
Also note that ''side work'' can take on a life of its own. Do something for one friend, and he tells all of his friends, and they tell all of their friends. It quickly gets out of hand - to the point that you have no time left for your own work.
