Like Dean, when I saw this thread I expected it to be about detergent vs. non-detergent oil. So yes, a lot of engines in vehicles built prior to 1954, that had been run without filters, were found to have accelerated wear due to the switch from non-detergent to detergent oil. This would have been happening in over a fairly short period of time from mid fifties to mid sixties so a young fella like Barnyard would not have known about it. I remember it very clearly, but don't call it damage from modern oil, call it what it is: uninformed purchasing.
