Oliver had a superior cold starting aid for their early diesels such as the R.C. 88. They called it Thermostart or something like that. Essentially it was a small heating element screwed into the intake manifold. A button or key position activated this heater. When on for 25-30 seconds, this heating element would heat the air in the manifold. Then crank the engines a few turns to get this air into the chambers. Repeat the process to warm the new cold air now in the manifold again. Now start the engine. This was such an effective method that modern tractors now employ this type of starting aid as an alternative or replacement for ether, namely New Holland Genesis tractors. As for rear ends, wouldn't worry too much about it. If bearings are good (wheels don't wobble as they rotate), this is the strongest rear end of its time. These rear ends are the most popular ones used for guys who build homemade pulling tractors with automotive V-8s. You'll be happy. These were the cream of the crop in their day.
