Plowing has become non-existant in modern day farming. Modern day farmers are selling thier plows if they happen to have one around. John Deere has even quite producing plows. Everything has went to no-till (around here anyways). Young farmers around here have likely not plowed even one day in thier life. It is a rarity to see somebody even plow thier terraces anymore. And if you do happen to see that, it's likely just an old timer who is just doing what they always did.

That said, back to your question, new clubs are generally started by who? Younger guys, right? And if they don't have an interest it? Or worse yet, never have done it in thier life?

I went to kind of an Old Homes Day last summer. Wasn't really a plow day, but they were demonstrating alot of stuff at the event. And plowing was open to the public (could plow with your own tractor and plow in between a certain time frame). I would say 15 to 20 tractors plowed that day. But they also had a tractor show and a tractor parade. I don't think they would of had as many tractors that plowed that day, if they hadn't of already been there for the show and parade. Meaning, some wouldn't of came if it was only for the plowing. Basically all the tractors that plowed, were also in the show and parade. Only about 1/4 of the tractors in the show, also plowed. But about 90 percent of the tractors in the show, were in the parade. This was all at the same place, on the same day.

So out of all three things (show, parade, plowing), the show was clearly the most popular, with parade trailing a close 2nd, and plowing being a far behind 3rd. This of course is just looking at the popularity at this one event.

I have thought about trying to start up a plow day. But one of the guys that I thought would help head it up with me, actually lost interest in old tractors. His interest kind of turned to other things. And I've always had concerns about the number of both participants and spectators. How well it would go over? Figured if I got the participants, the spectators would either happen or it wouldn't. But when my friend lost interest in old tractors themself, I figured the numbers on the participant side was likely to be thin at best. Figured if I started a plow day, it would end up being just me that plowed with nobody watching. And you sure aren't going to build something up from that.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
