Until the engine is running you only need enough to roll or slide the tractor around for short distances. It would be still be a great learning experience for a young person to simply reassemble the engine and get it running for maybe only the cost of some gaskets and a few missing parts? Enjoy your tractor in the rough until after you get established in the world. Then you can come back to it again to do the expensive engine overhaul, put new tires on it and give it a fresh paint job when all that will only cost you a weeks take home pay.
Spending some money now on a factory service manual and an operator's manual is great way to start and learn a lot about your tractor. Check E-bay for used manuals.
