GMO is only something to use as a trade barrier. Mexican corn growers are being driven into bankruptcy because their farmers cant compete with the rest of the North American corn growers. Many farms in Mexico were only subsistence scale farms growing corn on 10-20 acres with a hoe, and picking corn by hand. Open pollinated varieties, best suited to local areas, much of it grown and eaten locally as corn flour. Once corn could flow into Mexico from USA and Canada after the NAFTA agreement, many farmers had to leave their farms and head to the citys, or immigrant north in search of work. Free trade in corn destroyed their local economy, and trying to limit the imports of corn, would greatly help the Mexican farmers. There are plenty of farmers in USA and Canada now growing no GMO corn and soybeans so that they can be shipped to Europe, so this wont make much impact really.
