If the inside of the muffler is all rusted up and blown out, it probably won't be long before the rest of it will be falling off the manifold. Likely when you brush up against that small tree limb that don't look big enough to do any damage.
You can try what you want, but you might only be buying yourself just a little bit of time.
I inquired about a straight pipe one time at the parts store. The guy behind the counter fixed me up with a muffler that wasn't to expensive. I think he had probably seen to many old timers come in that were hard of hearing.
