My grandmother's uncle guarded railroad tracks near Chattanooga. When he mustered out, he and his 3 brothers started farming in Iowa. Iverson, the name, born in Norway.
I worked with a WWII veteran who patrolled a railroad track with a fellow 18 yr old. Along the way, one day, two guys came out of the woods waving a white flag. They wanted to surrender to the Americans. So they agreed to march them back to the base. Wait, wait! We have some more friends that want to surrender too OK, bring them along. About 150 came out.. That gave the GI's quite a scare. Would have been the end if they'd been a few days earlier. Imagine the impression when they marched into the base camp.
