As for backhoes, a "real" backhoe, as in built specifically as a backhoe not an attachment added to a general purpose tractor is absolutely indispensible on a homestead property. They have vastly more power, stability and speed than any add on setup and they will be your forklift and crane, pull your other stuff out of the mud / ditch, build and maintain your roads and even occasionally dig and load dirt too.
So no, don't buy sight unseen, nor buy anything other than a fairly recent construction backhoe perhaps 1990-2004 range. They will not be cheap, but they will be far more serviceable generally and not overly expensive since an excavator is more efficient for many construction activities. Most any large construction project you will see many skid steers and excavators and always a stray backhoe somewhere on the site due to their versatility.
