In 1953 you could buy the JD B replacement carb for $19.50.
Average inflation rate since then is about 3.5% so a new one should assuming same conditions should run about $216.70 in today's money.
Go on Ebay and you can buy a new JD B carb for $552.99. That comes in at just under 5% annual increase. Going from the most common tractor (sell a lot) to a collector item (sell a few) - the price doesn't seem that far off.
What would be really interesting is seeing the price for an 8N carb in 1953. You can have a new one shipped to your house today for under $32. I bet that one has beat inflation!
