Take a look at the tractor and see what year and model it is, to me that is more important than what condition the rims are in

There are 3 different models of the Ag 4000 along with a few industrial models

4000SU (special utility) looks more like the smaller 3000 and has 28 inch wheels

4000AP (all purpose) is your standard 4000 that can had 30 or 38 inch wheels

4000 row crop (4200) is a high clearance model that normally has 38 inch rims

My 4000 industrial (4500) had 24 inch rims but now has 30 inch

The 65-mid 68 models had louvered hoods and lower hp engines

Early gas models has 192 ci engines

The mid 68-75 models had smooth sided hoods with engine improvements for about 6 more hp

Later gas models had 201ci engines

If the rims have rust but are dry there s likely been a leak at one time and that rust does need addressed but not right away

It the rim has rust and is wet or damp in that area in needs to be addressed right away

These tractors can have power adjust or non adjust rims, new rims are available if the old ones are beyond repair but power adjust rims are pricy

I recently purchased 2 new 34 inch power adjust rims for my 6600 at a touch over $600 each

There are options though, used rims and centers for 28 inch can be used from 4000SU, 4600SU, 3910, 4610SU, 3930 and some 4630 models

Used 30 inch rims can be used from 4000, 4600, 4610, 4630, some 5600 models, 5610, 5610S and 5640 models

The models with 38 inch rims are a bit more of an issue has they used 13.6-38 tires on 12 inch wide rims, the the 5000 series with 38 s usually had 15.5-38 tires on 14 inch wide rims so there s not as many choices out there, but a tire and rim swap can be done to used 30 inch in place of the 38 s on the AP models

As for ballast I feel that s a personal choice, I have alcohol in the 4000SU for a little more traction

Same in the 4500 for loader work

No ballast, liquid or wheel weights on the 4000AP, this tractor has done very little tillage but will pull 3-16 s or and 8 ft wheel disc without additional weight

In my 30 plus years of ownership the tractor has been primarily used for haying and brush hogging. It has seen a lot a road use traveling between farms, the extra weight wasn t a necessity and would only increase tire wear on the road

You decide if you need the extra ballast for your app

The mechanical condition of the tractor is must important

Rear tires cost more than rims so thread wear and dry rot are more important to me than rim condition

Of course rusted out rims will lower the amount I d give for a tractor

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
