I never plowed in a competition .So I am guessing the reason for plowing the dead furrow at the beginning is to then plow it shut as you start the land plowing the back furrow so it does not make a ridge in the field. Am I correct in that. If so it seems like a lot more effort than I was ever taught to plow for a crop. As dad used to plant edible beans so they didn't want a ridge from a back furrow nor a trough/ditch from a dead furrow either.
