Sitting on the seat, which side is the alternator/generator on? If on the right side your tractor was built before mid 1950, will have distributor on front of the engine and have a resistor mounted on the back of the dash. It will use a squarish looking coil mounted on the distributor assembly.
If Alt/Gen is on the left side your tractor was built after mid 1950, will have distributor slanting out from right front corner of the block and will have no dash mounted resistor. It will have a common round can coil mounted away from the distributor.
It is important to know which type a person is dealing with before trying to troubleshoot.
