Welcome Allen!
If the wiring is original, there would have been a resistor under the dash.
The old point style ignition is very simple, power comes to the coil from the ignition switch, through the resistor (if equipped). From the coil a wire goes to the points, which complete the circuit by grounding the coil. Each time the points open the coil fires.
Having a simple test light or voltmeter makes testing easier.
Most times the problem is corroded points, they can be cleaned with a point file and will work again.
Service tip: Some of the N series Fords had the distributor on the front of the engine, some on the side. If yours is on the front, it is designed to be removed to be serviced. Easy and foolproof, much easier than trying to get to it with it in place. Hopefully yours is on the side, much easier to service! If on the side do not remove it!
