I've spent a lot of time on 285s, they were both so leaky I couldn't begin to tell you what your leak is for certain. It kind of sounds like valve cover gasket, I'm pretty sure both of ours had leaky valve cover gaskets. They were also prone to diesel leaks, pretty much everywhere it seemed, but they never leaked bad enough to need to park long enough to repair. Although it needs the fuel tank sealed up now. They function as the big horses on our farm, they are heavy built and pull like freight trains and seem to get real good traction, but are nimble enough to be excellent with a 7ft bush hog, a wagon, or a hay rake. Love the 8 speed trans, do not love the Multi Power at all. Powerwashing with degreaser would be my first move as well. Hope you can fix it pretty easily. I always thought it would be nice to look at that tractor and not think i wonder if imma have to put oil in it.
