My choice is Mobil 1 multi-vis, because it has a very good reputation and Wallyworld sells it at a reasonable price.
First oil into an old engine that's new to me, or the start up of an overhaul/rebuild is a cheaper single weight that gets changed in less than 10 hours. That's just to remove any debris that may be loose in the engine. I just can't get my shop hospital clean so there may be some dust etc in there.
The reason for synthetic in my case is resistance to heat breakdown and ease of cranking when cold.
