That's a hydraulic clutch. From your description I'd wager the master cylinder above the pedal is bad. You can try bleeding it as bill described but don't hold your breath... If it's not the master, it's probably the slave... so hope it's the master or you'll be splitting it... which isn't horrible as splits go, but not much fun either. The fact it releases somewhat, than re-engages, and you then have to pull the pedal back up suggests to me that fluid is bypassing the master piston. It uses mineral oil in the system which shares a reservoir with the brakes above the brake master cylinder.
