There was a temp scale in the older ones manuals, 5w30 for arctic/canada winter temps, 10w30 covered the normal range of temps, 15w40 for warm climates.
We don't change our oil by seasons so we have used 10w30 and 15w40 in a pinch. I never had a problem starting in the winter.
The premium udt vs regular udt was huge, the premium udt synthetic by far better in -30 c. Regular UDT ridiculous long warm up time in winter unless stored in heated space.
