I own a John Deere 520.There is a wire that is connected from the starter (Contactor switch that is attached to the Starer) to the coil that bypasses the ignition resister only when the starter is engaged. This allows a full 12 volts directly to the ignition coil.
Once the engine starts and the operator removes their foot from the start pedal, then power is supplied to the ignition Ballester resister and the power from the starter is no longer in play.
POSSIBLY you are NOT getting power from the battery to the Ballester resister???.. so, engine dies when start pedal is released. Check for 12 volts getting to the Ballester resister when ignition is turned on.
