Okay thanks JMOR! I partly misinterpreted what the OP said in addition I did not know that there were 6 volt systems that reduced coil current by using a resistor. To the original poster hopefully you know that your ..12 to 6 volt resistor.. has nothing to do with the alternator wiring. Resistors can be used in place of the diode shown in the attached diagram At the moment I cannot give you a certain value for a resistor that would work, I believe a 10 ohm would do it. Maybe someone else can chime in to agree or give the correct value. A resistor commonly used to reduce coil current will not work properly when placed in the excite circuit to spade terminal 1, the engine will continue to run when the switch is turned off.
