All this talk of sleeves will not prevent the capillary action of moisture and the things carried with that moisture. A galvanized pipe column would be good but not especially cost effective. In the construction trade we quite often paint the columns and steel door frames with an asphaltic material where they contact the concrete floor or foundation. I have used roofing tar, tar based mastic, and even flex seal. The goal is to seal the column surface and prevent moisture from getting in and rust from starting.
