Do you have the tin band over the brush access windows off number 12 in the attached diagram? That will have to be off and the brushes worked out over the commutator ..thing with copper strips on it on the armature.. I am just assuming when you say ..putting armature in back.. that is where you are installing it. As in I call the front of the starter the part the gear is on. Tell me exactly what ..starting on compression.. is? Only thing I have ever heard that apply to is locomotives and large stationary engines like they have in municipal power plants in which case they use air pressure. Never heard of it being applied to a smaller engine like in a tractor.
