Not sure about your area, but in my area, old fashion farm auctions drastically decreased in numbers before all this online auction thing came about. Online probably hasn't helped, but we were definately seeing fewer auctions anyways, (around here).
I can't really explain it. But I think alot of people were weeded out in the 80's. As the average farm has gotten bigger, the number of farmers has reduced, in turn reducing the number of farmers and the number of farm auctions.
But one of the bigger kickers around here is, real estate agents/auctioneers will turn thier nose up at having a sale if there isn't any real estate involved, and there isn't a lot of stuff worth while. As in say, someone has a little bit of stuff, no real estate, and then mainly household. Around here, those people are suggested (or told) to take there little bit of stuff to a consignment sale, and have a garage sale for the household items. So I guess, farmers aren't the only ones who have gotten bigger. Auctioneers no longer waste thier time with the small stuff, in a way. And that also reduces number of auctions.
Just more has went on, than the new online thing. And those things were taking hold, even before.
