you can remove the band and mow, throwing the grass out that side, as the blades cut it off leaving it long for hay. With the side panel off, it will not carry the cuttings around under the deck shredding or mulching them up as it does with the side closed. And as D slater posted it uses less power in heavy material for general cutting as long as you aren't looking for it to be shredded.
