Tom, I don't know of a good substitute for calcium in northern climates. yes, i have also seen the negitive posts concerning calcium. It is all i have ever used with no problems, it works, its cheap, so i figure why change. As long as your tubes are in good shape, it will give you many years of trouble free service. As far as adding weight, it should be added on or behind your drive wheels, but if your using the three point this may not be an option. Hope this helps. Mike
