If they really wanted to do this, then the answer is something like the electric trains of the 1950's with the overhead wire system. I also recall one system where the road itself was part of the distribution system. Go off the road, no power. That was experimental IIRC.
Outside of that, until we start using Small Modular Reactors, there is no way we can possibly supply the power needed to covert AND live the basic lifestyle we do now. And right there is the crux of the issue- those in power intend to live even better than now, but us peons? Not so much...
