You are entirely correct, Paul. When it comes to moving energy around a system there is no free lunch - you can never get out more than what was put in. When dealing with continuous, high power applications it is impractical to carry the necessary energy in batteries. A little simple math shows that for a 100 hp tractor (75 kW) running at just 50% average load for ten hours would require a battery capacity of nearly 400 kW-h. This is four times the capacity of the largest battery available for the Tesla S and would weigh several tons. There is also no free lunch at the other end of the system when the battery has to be recharged. You'd need to hook up to a 480 volt, 100 amp supply for ten hours to transfer this much energy from the power grid to the the battery. And this is all for just 50 horsepower of work output for one day - for a large farm tractor or combine doing serious work multiply these numbers by at least 5, if not 10.
