Confusing is right! I had to replace some U-joints on my batwing mower last month. It is old and most of the drivelines have been replaced over the years, but the four U-joints I needed appeared identical. I spent several hours looking on the internet trying to find a match, and I found the same confusion and contradictions. I finally thought I had it figured out and ordered what I needed. Two of the four worked fine. One joint was OK in all respects except that the bearing caps were the wrong diameter, just small enough that they were a very loose fit in the yoke. I used the old caps and it worked fine. The last one was correct in all respects except the bearing caps were about .020 too long. I never found a good source of info on the internet. If anyone can point me to a good reference guide that explains U-joints, I'd sure appreciate it.
