There's more to building a pond than just piling up dirt for a dam, and putting an outlet tube in it where you want the water level to be.
If it don't hold water, than something wasn't done right when it was built.
Some people have had luck using bentonite, and some people haven't. Just depends on what the situation is.
If there is a layer of sand, or ledge rock under the dam or water pool, GOOD LUCK. Dam material has to be of the right soil composition, and if there is a table of sand or rock under where the dam was built, that needed to be dug out first, and dam not built on the top of it.
Bottom line, if dam wasn't constructed right, then you are limited on what you can do or try, without just ripping out the whole dam, and re-constructing it the right way.
