There's still one like that down the road from me, with no roof hatches. It was used until 1990. The old guy, named Harold, had two 16-foot-long flat hay wagons with add on sides, with a liftable gate 12 feet back. That gave him 4 feet to stand on and scoop from. By this time though, he had acquired a short aluminum Harvest Handler elevator to run the corn from the wagon up through the hole instead of lifting the scoop up there. I'm not sure how the elevator was moved out of the way to get the wagons through, though.
