Bob The main reason for the cupola was so rain or snow couldn't get inside the hole where your elevator dropped grain through the roof. Plus you didn't have to get up there to put a lid over the hole when the elevator wasn't up there. Most of the cupola had a door that you opened when you put your elevator up there. That was my job to walk up the elevator when you had it close and open the door and then stay up there and ride the elevator the rest of the way up so you would get it centered in the hole. That was usually fun when there were wasp nests up there.
