Folk that dont have clay soils and real winter wont ever quite understand.....
My driveway is a clear section, then a section with grove trees shading it, then a hill facing the north, then the yard a slight hill facing south.
Each section thaws out the frost and slop different times.
So my driveway is impassable for a couple weeks most springs. Its long enough it would cost too much to rebuild and haul in enough 2 inch plus base, etc to make it durable on the clay base we have here. It also has the power line and the phone line buried down each wheel track so major reworking would run into that expense.
Cant pour enough simple gravel on top to make it hold up during that spring thaw period.
