The whole "fall between the lugs" thing is way overblown.
These guys that insist on fighting with their chains, have to be so tight you can play a tune on them, and the spaghetti nests of bungee cords, are shooting themselves in the foot.
Of course the chains are going to wedge down in between the lugs, you've given them no choice but to.
We've NEVER used bungee cords or chain tighteners. Just get the chains as tight as you can by hand and leave it at that. No jacking up the tractor. No deflating tires. No struggling. Throw them on and hook them up. If you're spending more than 10 minutes a side, you're taking too long.
The chains will naturally be a little loose, and if the chains are between the lugs, they will fall out from between the lugs just before they hit the ground, then the tractor tire drives on them.
If you don't care about the ground underneath, double ring chains are a good choice. Road chains aren't as effective but better than nothing and less harsh on paved surfaces. Studded logging chains are for if you really want to dethatch and aerate the ground, or get a little spring plowing in early.

"Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor."
