Run a 10 gauge wire from that post on back of alternator (marked in red) to battery positive. Like I said it does not have to be the battery post. It can be where ever the large battery wire runs to such as the starter solenoid.
Get it running. Use the tractor. If it charges and works for you that is all you need.
If you find you have to rev the tractor way up to get the alternator charging you can come back later and we can tell you again how to remove plug marked in green and wire it to cure this problem.
A simple volt meter touched to battery post will tell you if it is charging. 12 volts not charging. 14 volts charging.
I think it great your son is working through this FFA project with you. He will learn lessons to last his a life time from the project.
