I have done it both ways. Back when you could get good parts and pipe fittings with accurate threads you didn't really need anything. Now with poor product and poor quality threads you probably will need something. Tape goop or what ever you choose. Fuel tanks are not some scientific thing to seal fittings on. Pretty much anything that you would use on an engine gasket will seal the threads. I have used several things tape,permatex,liquid teflon,rector seal, you choose.
