Have your fuel lines been replaced? They rot out. Mine were already replaced when I got the tractor. The original ones were abandoned behind the tank. When I had the tank out I removed them, and fine tuned the placement of the replacement ones. There was a serial number break on fuel gauge sender/fuel lift pipe. Early ones had a screen on the bottom end. Later ones did away with the screen and put a little in line filter just before the lift pump to keep debris out of the pump. When I had mine apart I drained and flushed the tank, tore off the in tank screen, and installed the in line one by the lift pump. Then, later on the fuel gauge quit working. I have tried multiple times to get a new sender. No luck.
