Hard water and soft water from the farm water softener has the same amount of salt, just a different flavor. NaCo3 (washing soda) instead of CaCo3 (limestone). Makes just as much solid on evaporation. Soft water is usually suggested for radiators in place of hard water because when the water evaporates what's left is more easily dissolved than limestone. Neither is beneficial to batteries. Best to use distilled water for batteries for long battery life. It costs 59 cents a gallon at the grocery store, not worth futzing around or wrecking a battery.
